AI data center construction drives up demand for welders, plumbers and electricians

The AI boom is creating jobs in the trades: data center construction is boosting demand for welders, plumbers, electricians and HVAC technicians, CNBC reports. According to ZipRecruiter, there are 164 percent more job postings for welders and pipefitters than a year ago, and the average minimum salary in data center job offers has risen 125 percent, to almost $208,000 a year. At the same time, 70 percent of Americans oppose building a data center near them, and New York and Texas have started slowing down such projects.

California: fines of up to $10,000 for a robotaxi that blocks emergency services

California Governor Gavin Newsom signed SB 1246, under which courts will be able to impose fines of up to $10,000 for each autonomous vehicle that blocks emergency services for more than 30 minutes. Companies such as Waymo, Tesla and Zoox will have to send their own technicians to the scene, and remote vehicle operators will have to work in the US and hold a valid California driver's license. The law takes effect on July 1, 2028.

Reflection AI unveils Beam, an open 501-billion-parameter model said to match China's GLM-5.2 with 3-4 times less compute

Nvidia-backed US startup Reflection AI presented Beam on Monday, October 6 - a mixture-of-experts model with 501 billion parameters, 23 billion of them active at a time. According to the company, it matches China's GLM-5.2 in reasoning with 3-4 times less compute and comes close to Qwen 3.8-Max on some coding tasks, although in its own tests it still loses to some Chinese models. The model's weights, along with tools for running, evaluating and fine-tuning it, are due to be released in October; in the future, the company wants to sell an "AI factory" - software in which businesses build their own models on their own data instead of paying for ChatGPT or Claude. Reflection rents its compute from SpaceX: from July 1, 2026, through the end of 2029, it pays $150 million a month for Nvidia GB300 cards at the Colossus 2 data center - about $6.3 billion in total, although after the first three months either side can terminate the contract with 90 days' notice. Nvidia has invested $800 million in the startup.

OpenAI unveils Decisions API - the Luna model picks from preset options in a fraction of a second

At DevDay, OpenAI presented the Decisions API, in which the Luna model receives a predefined set of options, such as image classification categories or possible agent actions, and picks one of them in a fraction of a second. The service is in a limited preview for now and, according to TechCrunch, resembles the Jev model that the startup TypeSafe AI released in September. TypeSafe CEO Diogo Almeida responded on X with a joke about the start of the "clone wars."
