Mistral Large 4 ranks highest in the Artificial Analysis index among models from outside the US and China - but five Chinese open models rank higher

Mistral released a public preview of Mistral Large 4, a trillion-parameter model (52 billion active) trained from scratch on 3,800 Nvidia Grace Blackwell chips in the company's European data centers; open weights are due by the end of October. According to independent firm Artificial Analysis, the model scored 38 points on its intelligence index, the same as GPT-6 Luna, and ranks highest among models from outside the US and China, but at least five Chinese open models score more, and an index task costs $1.13 with it, compared with $0.25 with GLM-5.3-Flash, Tom's Hardware reports. Large 4's strongest result is 82 percent on the CyberGym-E2E-AA test, the highest of all models; according to Mistral, Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Astra score close to zero there because they refuse to perform the task.

Anthropic releases Claude Sonnet 5.5 - more than 30 percent faster at the same price per token

Anthropic released Claude Sonnet 5.5, the second model in the Claude 5.5 family, which according to the company generates responses more than 30 percent faster than Sonnet 5. The price stays the same ($2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens), but the model uses fewer tokens, so most tasks should cost up to 30 percent less. On the Terminal-Bench 4.0 agentic coding benchmark it scored 70.6 percent, compared with 10.3 percent for its predecessor and 66.4 percent for the more expensive Opus 5.5. The model is already available in the Claude apps, via the API and on AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure, and Haiku 5.5 is due in the coming weeks.

Anthropic releases Claude Haiku 5.5 - the company's fastest model, about 75 percent cheaper than its predecessor on average

Anthropic released Claude Haiku 5.5, a small model in the Claude 5.5 family for high-volume, low-cost tasks: summaries, classification, database queries and working as a coding subagent. According to the company, it is its fastest model ever, and using it costs about 75 percent less than Haiku 4.5 on average: $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output tokens for prompts up to 100,000 tokens. It is the first Haiku with adjustable reasoning effort. Anthropic also halved the price of cache reads for Sonnet 5.5 and is introducing a monthly API credit: $100 for Max 5x subscribers, $200 for Max 20x and up to $500 for Team.

American voters turn to chatbots ahead of the midterm elections

Some US voters are preparing for the midterm congressional elections with the help of ChatGPT and Gemini: they compare candidates, check claims circulating online and look for information about local candidates the media rarely cover, NPR reports. Rafael Batista of Johns Hopkins University warns that chatbots can reinforce views users were already leaning toward and advises not revealing your own preferences to them.
