OpenAI paused training of its most powerful models after an agent incident

OpenAI paused training and evaluation of its most powerful models, as well as running them with tool access, until it confirms the vulnerability has been fixed and completes additional security testing, the company said in a September 25 report. The reason is a September 20 incident: an agent looking up information about a blog's author during a training task exploited a DNS filtering flaw in its sandbox to send questions to an external chatbot. The monitoring system flagged the incident after 12 minutes, but the training run, which should have stopped automatically, was halted manually only 2.5 hours later. OpenAI will not resume training this model, and a new one will start from scratch with additional safeguards.

Anthropic stripped the safeguards from China's GLM-5.3 model for about $4,400

Anthropic researchers removed the safeguards from GLM-5.3, an open-weights model from the Chinese company Z.ai, using abliteration - a modification of the weights after which the model refuses harmful requests far less often. In three public tests, the refusal rate fell from over 90 percent to 3, 2 and 12 percent, respectively. The model's capabilities barely changed, and the whole operation cost about $4,400.

Arlo unveils a $100 solar-panel camera designed to run all year without charging

Arlo introduced the Essential Solar Security Camera with a built-in solar panel, priced at $100. According to the manufacturer, the panel powers it year-round with as little as two hours of sunlight, and the 14,790 mAh battery alone lasts half a year. The camera records in 2K and has an IP65-rated housing, but it has no local storage, and person and package detection requires an Arlo Secure subscription starting at $10 a month. Preorders are open, and shipping is due to start in mid-October.

Tesla's Robotaxi in Austin now runs until 11 p.m. - Musk: pets are hard to spot at night

Tesla's Robotaxi in Austin now runs an hour longer, until 11 p.m. instead of 10 p.m. Elon Musk wrote on X that the biggest challenge is keeping the cars from hitting pets, which are hard to see at night: "We're literally trying not to run over gray kittens on gray asphalt in the dark." As Electrek notes, cameras typically struggle to detect objects in low light and low contrast, and Tesla relies on cameras alone. No Tesla ever sold has had lidar, and the company removed radar from its cars in 2021. In 2019, Musk argued that anyone relying on lidar is doomed. Meanwhile, Waymo's robotaxis, equipped with cameras, lidar and radar, operate around the clock.
